"Sweet Home La Porte"

Of course we have all seen the movie "Sweet Home Alabama," but have you actually been to a battle reenactment like the one in the movie? Well, each year our town reenacts the Battle of San Jacinto. ***If you need a little Texas history refresher...The Battle of San Jacinto, fought on April 21, 1836, was the decisive battle of the Texas Revolution. Led by General Sam Houston, the Texian Army engaged and defeated General Antonio López de Santa Anna's Mexican forces in a fight that lasted just eighteen minutes. About 630 of the Mexican soldiers were killed and 730 captured, while only nine Texans died.***

Back to the story...Stephen and I had both visited the monument. It is only about five minutes from our house and is a frequent place for intermediate school field trips, but neither of us had ever been to the festival, so this year we decided to take Cole. It was blazing hot, but we had a good time. Some people were way into it...costumes and all. Next year, I think I will dress up like a prairie girl. HaHa. It was very "Little House..." I thought the guns and cannons might scare Cole, but he didn't even flinch. Here are a couple pics from our nerdy history day.

Cole taking a sip of water during the battle.

The "Curtain Call" for the Texian Army

Cole trying to play with some bigger boys...they were shooting marshmallow guns..they totally ignored it...it was kind of sad.

Cole having his first frozen lemonade after trying to play with the big boys.

The San Jacinto Monument...the world’s tallest war memorial stands at San Jacinto. It is 15 feet taller than the Washington monument. The reflection pool is on the opposite side. I guess everything is just bigger in Texas.
